Bitget Raises Security Incident Loss Estimate to $387.5 Million

The losses of Bitget crypto exchange due to a recent security breach are increasing. Bitget has increased the confirmed value of lost assets to approximately $387.5 million. The earlier estimates were around $351.6 million. The updated figure includes additional Zcash and TRON assets identified through further on-chain tracing. The latest estimates have been shared by the CEO, Gracy Chen officially.

Bitget exchange had detected unauthorized transfers from its hot wallet infrastructure at 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026. According to Bitget, the attackers targeted a critical backend system within the wallet infrastructure. They then manipulated the transaction data to trigger the exchange’s authorization process. However, the exchange claims its private keys were not compromised. It also claims that its cold wallets remained secure throughout the incident.

The affected assets were spread across multiple blockchain networks including Ethereum, XRP Ledger, Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain, and Arbitrum. The transfers involved assets such as $ETH, $XRP, $USDT, $USDC, $BNB, and $AVAX. The latest updates have added Zcash and TRON holdings to the confirmed total following further investigation.

Attack Patterns Link to North Korean Groups

Bitget said its preliminary investigation found that the attack method and IP patterns were highly resembling with North Korean hacking groups. The exchange is now working with law enforcement agencies, blockchain security firms to investigates the incident and tracks the transferred assets.

Gracy Chen said the full confirmed loss will be covered by Bitget’s User Protection Fund. The fund currently holds more than $464 million, slightly higher than the funds lost so far. The exchange said customer account balances remain accurate, while deposits and trading services continue.

However, withdrawals remain suspended as a precaution while Bitget works to secure its systems. Bitget has also introduced a recovery bounty program offering 5% of successfully frozen or recovered funds to participants who directly assist with recovery efforts.
