Canadian Dollar Slips as USD/CAD Hits Near-Term High Post BoC Rate Cut

The Canadian Dollar (CAD) weakened against the US Dollar (USD) during Wednesday’s US market session, pushing USD/CAD to a near-term high of 1.3740 before retracing back to the 1.3700 level. The Bank of Canada (BoC) delivered a widely anticipated quarter-point rate cut, while unexpectedly strong US ISM Services Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) figures for June further pressured the CAD.

The BoC implemented its first rate cut, lowering the main reference rate by 25 basis points from 5.0% to 4.75%. This move, while expected, has shifted traders’ focus to the upcoming Canadian labor figures due on Friday. However, the release of the US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report on the same day is likely to overshadow Canadian employment data, influencing market sentiment more significantly.

In the BoC’s Monetary Policy Statement, Governor Tiff Macklem emphasized that future rate decisions will be made on a meeting-by-meeting basis. This cautious approach indicates the BoC’s intent to monitor economic conditions closely before committing to further rate adjustments.

In contrast, the US ISM Services PMI rebounded to a nine-month high of 53.8 in May, significantly above the forecast of 50.8 and recovering from April’s 16-month low of 49.4. This robust performance in the services sector underscores resilience in the US economy, contributing to the USD’s strength.

Meanwhile, the US ADP Employment Change report for May showed a lower-than-expected increase in private sector jobs, printing at 152K against the forecast of 173K. The previous month’s figure was also revised slightly lower to 188K from 192K. Despite this, the market remains focused on the broader NFP report due on Friday.

Market bets on a Federal Reserve rate cut in November have risen to 80%, reflecting growing speculation that the Fed might ease its monetary policy later this year. This sentiment adds another layer of complexity to the USD/CAD dynamics, as investors weigh the potential for divergent monetary policies between the Fed and the BoC.

Trade Idea:

Consider selling USD/CAD on a pullback towards 1.3740, targeting 1.3650 with a stop-loss at 1.3770, based on expected volatility from upcoming employment data and divergent central bank policies.
