Coinbase, BlackRock, Strategy Form Bitcoin Security Consortium

Coinbase, the renowned crypto exchange, has unveiled the Bitcoin Security Consortium. Coinbase has reportedly collaborated with BlackRock, Strategy, Blockstream, Block, Fidelity Digital Assets, and many other market participants. The purpose of this consortium is to prepare the Bitcoin ecosystem for future quantum computing threats. As Coinbase mentioned in its official press release, the development is set to fortify the Bitcoin ecosystem’s long-term security against threats that quantum computing could pose in the future. Though quantum computers that can break the existing cryptographic benchmarks are not available currently. CEOs of Tether and CryptoQuant have already said that we still have many years as there is no immediate threat to Bitcoin. Still, preparation must start well beforehand.

Coinbase Boosts Post-Quantum Digital Asset Security Roadmap

With the launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, Coinbase endeavors to secure digital assets through coordinated action across the wider crypto network. The development comes after recommendations from the platform’s Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain. According to the board, the current cryptographic mechanisms shielding almost all crucial chains would become notably vulnerable after the advancement of such technology.

While experts are still uncertain about the specific timeline, Coinbase’s advisory board emphasized that procrastinating preparations until the respective threat comes closer would massively increase migration’s complexity. As included in the strategy of the crypto exchange, it is upgrading the native key management mechanism, CoreKMS. It secures almost 99.9% of the under-custody assets. Additionally, Coinbase is creating PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version to back the signature algorithms that are quantum-resistant in the future while maintaining robust hardware-backed security.

Over the next year, Coinbase is set to unveil an autonomous signing pipeline, merging secure enclaves, secret-sharing, and threshold cryptography technologies. Additionally, in the next 2 to 3 years, the firm will attempt to broaden exploration into cutting-edge multi-party computation abilities when it comes to post-quantum cryptographic structures.

Accelerating Bitcoin Network’s Long-Term Quantum Resilience

According to Coinbase, other than internal development, the platform is investing in a market-wide partnership via the exclusively established Bitcoin Security Consortium. The project attempts to support open-source $BTC developers, advance quantum-related protocol enhancements like BIP-360, as well as deliver dependable information regarding the post-quantum preparedness of Bitcoin.

By combining research expertise, financial support, and engineering resources via this consortium, the platform expresses its trust in the crypto sector’s potential to develop a coordinated path via long-term quantum resilience, along with maintaining the decentralization and security of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
