Based on CoinShares’ report, despite the challenge that quantum computing algorithms pose to Bitcoin ($BTC), the flagship crypto asset is not under an immediate crisis. In this respect, the platform asserted that, although Shor’s and other quantum algorithms theoretically display risks to the signature schemes of Bitcoin. Even then, it clarifies that the practical exploitation is still decades away.
Thus, the platform has separated speculation from the solid evidence-backed analysis, specifically for institutional players. The multi-trillion-dollar value of Bitcoin ($BTC) naturally attracts scrutiny, but inflated assertions often overlook economic and technical realities. The present consensus signifies that quantum risk stands non-zero with the notable possibility for proper management. Thus, there will reportedly be ample time to effectively mitigate the risk via protocol evolution. Keeping this in view, there is no imminent quantum emergency threatening Bitcoin.
Bitcoin depends majorly on elliptic curve cryptography (Schnorr and ECDSA) to deal with transfer authorization, while SHA-256 hashing to address protection and mining. However, the algorithm of Shor could, theoretically, break elliptic curve cryptography in the case of the availability of effectively robust quantum computers. Nonetheless, just the addresses having exposed public keys, primarily Pay-to-Public-Key (P2PK) outputs, become directly vulnerable. Particularly, these hold almost 1.6M $BTC, underscoring 8% of cumulative supply.
