Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) and ZK-Rollups in Crypto: Everything You Need to Know

The blockchain space has introduced numerous technologies and innovations which have contributed to the better operation of networks, and some have enhanced user privacy.

Some of the most notable technologies introduced include Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) and ZK-Rollups, and today. We are going to be diving into each one individually to see what makes them stand out.

Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) And Their Role In the Blockchain Space

A zero-knowledge proof is essentially a way through which a validity of a statement can be provided without the need to reveal the statement at all. The prover, within this procedure, is essentially a party that has the objective of proving a claim. There’s also a verifier who shares the responsibility for validating the claim.

With that in mind, however, a zero-knowledge protocol is a method through which one party, which would be the prover, can provide to another party the verified that something is true without needing to reveal any information aside from the fact that the statement is true.

They are created as a means of improving the overall security of information for individuals.

Zero-knowledge proof solves issues by eliminating the requirement to provide information as a means of proving the validity of claims. The protocol itself uses a statement known as a witness as an input which can generate succinct proof of its validity. This proof can then provide a strong guarantee that a statement is true without needing to expose any information used for its creation.

Each zero-knowledge protocol has to adhere to specific rules or criteria, including completeness, soundness, and zero-knowledge.

Completeness indicates that if a statement is true, then an honest verifier can be convinced by an honest provider that they possess knowledge surrounding the correct input. Soundness indicates that if a statement is false, there is no dishonest provider who can unilaterally convince an honest verifier that they have knowledge about the correct input.

Zero-knowledge indicates that if a state is true, then the verifier learns nothing more other than the fact that the statement is actually true. Zero-knowledge proofs are made up of three elements, including witness, challenge, and response.

Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) and ZK-Rollups in blockchain and Crypto world

ZK-Rollups And How They Enhance Blockchains

Zero-knowledge rollups or ZK-rollups are a Layer-2 scaling solution that has been developed to scale a blockchain through moving computation, as well as state-storage off-chain.

What this essentially means is that they can process thousands of transactions in batches and only post a summary of the data to the mainnet of the original blockchain. This summary data can define the changes which need to be made to the network state, as well as cryptographic proof that the changes which have occurred are actually correct.

All off-chain computations can reduce the amount of data that needs to be posted on the main blockchain.

As such, any ZK-Rollup operators essentially need to submit a summary and provide validity proofs, after which they can demonstrate, through cryptography, the certainty that the proposed changes to the main network’s state are truly the end result of the execution of all of the transactions within the original batch.

A ZK-rollup’s state is maintained through a smart contract that has been deployed on top of the main network. In order for the state to be updated, ZK-rollup nodes have to submit validity proof for verification.

There are no delays when it comes to moving funds from a ZK-rollup to the main network, such as Ethereum, for example, due to the fact that the exit transactions get executed at the point in time when ZK-rollup contracts verify the validity proof. Additionally, when it comes to withdrawing funds from optimistic rollups, there can be a delay, which can allow anyone to challenge the transaction by utilizing fraud proof.

Keep in mind that networks, such as the Ethereum mainnet, utilize on-chain activities to process transactions and validate blocks. As such, this Layer-2 roll-up solution aims to utilize off-chain functionality and, as a result, reduce the gas fees associated with conducting transactions.

ZK-rollups, as a result of this, have blown up in terms of popularity due to the fact that they can boost usability among investors as well as traders who are consistently on the look for the best, quickest and cheapest processing of transactions.

How All Of It Gets Tied Together

Both of these technologies introduce different types of changes to the way in which a blockchain network operates as a means of enabling a better level of security, anonymity, or efficiency.

Zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) are typically used for conducting anonymous payments, for identity security, and for authentication or verifiable computations.

ZK-Rollups, on the other hand, are typically enabled as a Layer-2 solution on top of a network such as Ethereum to increase the overall speed at which transactions get verified whilst also reducing the overall gas fees associated with making the transactions.

Note that ZK-Rollups can use ZKPs by combining a large quantity of Layer-2 transactions off-chain into one transaction that can then get processed on the Ethereum mainnet, for example.

What this means is that instead of processing hundreds of transactions individually, all of them get rolled up within a single transaction.

This single transaction then takes the form of a validity proof, which is known as a succinct, which is a non-interactive argument of knowledge (SNARK) or succinct, and a transparent argument of knowledge (STARK).

Validity proofs essentially prevent fraud without manual intervention or verification, such as fraud proofs, which can make transaction confirmations with ZK-rollups much quicker and more scalable.
