NZD/USD Nears 0.6000 as Risk-On Sentiment and Kiwi Momentum Drive Fresh Gains

NZD/USD extends its advance on Friday, trading close to 0.6000 and approaching its highest level since late May. The New Zealand Dollar continues to outperform as broader market sentiment remains supportive of higher-beta currencies.

The latest US economic data showed private-sector activity accelerating in August. Flash S&P Global Services PMI rose strongly and exceeded expectations, while Manufacturing PMI weakened and fell short of forecasts. Despite the generally resilient US activity data, the US Dollar failed to gain meaningful traction, suggesting that NZD/USD’s rally is being driven more by strong Kiwi momentum and improving risk appetite than by changing expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

China’s decision to leave its benchmark lending rates unchanged also provided some stability for currencies sensitive to Chinese economic demand. As an important trading partner for New Zealand, developments in China remain particularly relevant for the New Zealand Dollar.

Broader financial-market sentiment is also supporting the Kiwi. Gold and Silver prices have climbed sharply, while the Australian Dollar is heading toward its longest sequence of weekly gains since 2020. Strength across commodity-linked and risk-sensitive assets reflects a broader improvement in investor appetite, creating a favorable environment for higher-beta currencies such as the NZD.

From a technical perspective, the 0.6000 psychological level represents the immediate hurdle for buyers, with the 2026 high located slightly above this area. A decisive break above the round-number resistance could reinforce the bullish structure and open the way toward fresh yearly highs.

Conversely, a sustained move below 0.5900 would weaken the current bullish momentum and suggest that the recent rally is losing steam. Given the steepness of the advance, traders may need a fresh catalyst to push NZD/USD convincingly through 0.6000 rather than triggering another rejection.

Trade idea:

NZD/USD remains bullish above 0.5900; buying a confirmed breakout above 0.6000 could target 0.6050, while rejection may pull the pair toward 0.5940.
