U.S. stocks trade sideways after jobs data sparks brief volatility

U.S. equities are moving in a narrow range after the January jobs report triggered sharp but short-lived swings. The data came in stronger than expected, initially lifting sentiment, but follow-through buying quickly faded. At the latest reading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 153 points (-0.31%) at 50,034.94, the S&P 500 is up 2.07 points (+0.03%) at 6,943.88, while the Nasdaq is lower by 33 points (-0.14%) at 23,069.13. The mixed performance reflects hesitation as traders reassess rate expectations following the labor data.

Overall, the session feels more like consolidation than trend development, with volatility concentrated around the data release rather than sustained directional momentum.
