The central bank and government in India have received some proposals in which requests have been made for the authorities to restore access to the Unified Payments Interface (or UPI). UPI is a broadly famous real-time system of payments. Several sources acquainted with the matter have confirmed that the authorities in the country have witnessed such proposals.
Several Proposals Request Indian Authorities to Remove Restrictions on UPI Access
A couple of proposals have been made in advance. Another proposal is reported to be developed in the next weeks by Bharat Web3 Association (BWA). It is the country’s exclusively developed advocacy group that focuses on crypto policies. While the proposals do not have coordination, they seem to be the initial prominent push made by the crypto stakeholders in India.
They intend to have policy-related modifications to govern the promising market since it has experienced several headwinds in terms of strict taxes, a shadow ban, and a crypto winter. Due to the shadow ban, the payment processors in India were deprived of financial access to the entities offering services related to crypto exchange. UPI-related services were additionally suspended ostensibly during that same time in 2022.

Since the COVID-19, Indian adoption of UPI has increased to a great extent with almost 74B UPI transfers worth $1.5T performed in the previous year. UPI lets residents pay for everyday goods like groceries with the use of a QR code connected to their bank accounts. The respective system is utilized across the country as merchants do not require paying any charges for adopting UPI payments.
Coinbase’s Launch in India Possibly Triggered the UPI Restrictions
The payment-related crisis seemed to have begun with the launch of the prominent crypto exchange Coinbase on the 7th of April last year. Sometime after the respective event, a Twitter post was shared by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This is the organization that controls UPI. In the tweet, it clarified that the agency had no idea that the UPI was being utilized by any crypto exchange.
One proposal for the restoration of UPI access has been made by a crypto exchange platform. The anonymous crypto exchange sought the elimination of the limitations that are implemented on the utilization of UPI-related services. In its statement, the platform noted that it has filed a representation under the NPCI to get the limitations removed from the UPI Access.
