Commerzbank has become the first bank in Germany to complete a blockchain-based Letter of Credit transaction for a client. The transaction is a major step that has been taken by the company to embrace digital innovation aimed at saving time and reducing costs.
Commerzbank completes blockchain-based trade finance transactions
Commerzbank is among the leading banks in Germany. The bank has a robust presence in the country as it is a partner to around 26,000 corporate client groups and nearly 11 million private and small businesses operating in Germany.
The German bank is now embracing blockchain technology and the benefits that this innovative space would have on the financial industry. As such, it has announced closing a Letter of Credit (LC) transaction on the blockchain on behalf of a client. The client in question is a Singaporean textile trader known as Ascentex Exim LLP.
The LC in question was issued to cater for a shipment of rubber threads from Thailand to Krungthai Bank. The transaction was done on Contour, which is a digital asset trade finance platform. The decentralized platform powered by Contour allowed for time and cost savings.
The China branch of Commerzbank also completed its first blockchain-based LC transaction. During the transaction, Commerzbank operated as the issuing bank for Nanjing Iron and Steel Company. The company imported raw materials from Jinteng International Co in Hong Kong, with the Letter of Credit being advised by Hang Seng Bank.
Commerzbank is pursuing digital transformation
The two live transactions have shown the commitment of Commerzbank to embracing digital transformation. Many banks have been exploring offerings in the blockchain industry, with the recent move paving the way for more adoption in the future.
The Divisional Board Member for Institutional Clients and Transaction Banking Sales at Commerzbank, Brigitte Réthier, noted that the initiative expressed the bank’s commitment to innovation and delivering impactful solutions to its clients. The executive also noted that these innovative offerings came with a wide range of benefits.
“This milestone reinforces our commitment to driving innovation and delivering value-added solutions to our clients. By leveraging the power of advanced technology, we aim to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and provide greater accessibility to trade finance, ultimately enabling businesses to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving global marketplace,” Réthier said.
As aforementioned, these transactions were enabled by Contour. Contour is a digital trade finance platform that taps the power of blockchain technology to streamline and bring efficiency to LC transactions.
Contour has been tapping blockchain technology and advanced data analytics solutions for its offerings. The platform presents a secure, transparent, and seamless ecosystem that will power the management of trade finance processes.
This digital solution will also have an impact on internal workflows while also improving the relationships between banks, importers, exporters, and other involved stakeholders. The solution marks a major step forward towards supporting the digital transformation of the trade finance operations that are offered by Commerzbank while reinforcing the commitment of this bank toward innovation.
