Microsoft launched Windows 10 S on May 2nd event. It is actually not a new operating system; instead, Microsoft Windows 10 S is a more secured and streamlined version of Windows 10. It actually does not look different from the original version of Windows 10. It still runs basic apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This way, it will not be difficult for the user to get accustomed to the new app.

Introduction of Microsoft Windows 10 S aimed at targeting Google’s Chromebook as its main competitors. The new version of Windows 10 targets educational institutions, in which Chromebook has begun to dominate, particularly in the United States.  Chromebook has some advantages, such as simplicity and user friendliness. Its main disadvantage is that the set-up process depends upon Wi-Fi connection. It means that in educational institutions that do not have such internet connection, Chromebook may not be applied.

Chromebook excels in web-based apps, such as Google Docs and Word Online. However, very few Android apps have been supported by the Google’s OS. In fact, very few Android-based apps have basic apps, such as Word for word processing, Excel for counting, and PowerPoint for presentation.  Google limits the services of Chromebooks to apps, which it secures.

It will not be easy for Microsoft Windows 10 S to take over the market, which has occupied by Chromebook. However, Microsoft still can target areas, where Chromebooks have not been widely used, particularly outside the US. Microsoft excels for offline-based operation. How Microsoft Windows 10 S Works

The new operating system – Microsoft Windows 10 S – is limited to apps available on Windows Store. It means that you cannot download any apps directly from the developer’s website on the the devices that run Windows 10 S. In other words, the developers need to submit the apps first to the Windows Store. Otherwise, users of Windows 10 S will not be able to get them.

In the May 2nd event, Microsoft promised that Office apps will come soon to the Windows Store. Users of Windows 10 S laptop will be able to run full-version apps. Nonetheless, the company offers Office 365 for Education free for students and teachers as long as they get the license through the educational institutions. Again, the apps provide the users access to online versions of the apps.

So, who are the targets of Windows 10 S?

The OS definitely targets educational sector. However, laptops or PCs that will run on the OS are from mostly mid to high-end class. In other words, it will probably be more popular among college students who need more advanced operating system. It seems that Office apps will be its distinguishing and even killing feature to beat Chromebook. Office is still the most popular apps among students, employees and professionals.

Along with the OS, Microsoft also launched Microsoft Surface Laptop that runs the OS. Of course, the competition is going to be even tighter. Beside Chromebook, Microsoft still has to consider another emerging competitor, namely Apple.
