By again offering DeFi-supported Bitcoin loans, Coinbase is increasing the accessibility for the US consumers. Nonetheless, at this time, the customers in the New York state cannot leverage this service. Even then, the crypto exchange has a plan to unveil this service in more jurisdictions. Overall, this endeavor signifies a significant move for the crypto exchange following a relatively uncertain history of the crypto lending realm.

Choppy Crypto Winter Pushes Investors and Users Far from Crypto-Backed Loans

During the 2022’s stormy crypto winter, many valued lending entities dealing with crypto saw huge losses. The prominent names in this respect include BlockFi, Genesis, and Celsius. They reportedly faced bankruptcy at that time, incurring billions in terms of losses. This massive setback drove investors and users away from sector of crypto-backed loans.

On the other hand, while introducing the latest DeFi-supported Bitcoin loans, Coinbase has highlighted these loans’ distinction from the former offerings. As per the crypto exchange, it works only as a mediator while the top DeFi lending platform Morpho is powering these operations. According to DL News, Morpho’s co-founder “Paul Frambot” labeled the platform’s app as a worthy choice for Coinbase for crypto-backed loans. As per the executive, Morpho strengthens Coinbase and other such entities in retaining complete control over their products without requiring 3rd parties.

Attempting for 2nd Time as Mediator to Lending Operations

This is Coinbase’s 2nd endeavor to enable consumers to get loans against crypto assets. Formerly, it conducted a program to let users borrow a maximum amount of $1M while locking 30% of the $BTC holdings thereof. Nonetheless, in 2023’s July, the platform discontinued the project after the U.S. SEC’s complaint about Coinbase’s alleged operations as an unlicensed broker, clearing agency, and exchange.
