While April has signified a heightened level of overall volatility, leading to an increase in trade volumes and activity, the Tokyo Financial Exchange (TFX) has not been so lucky. According to the exchange, it has experienced less in volumes than the chaos that was March this year.
Loss Against March, But March Was Extraordinary
TFX offers a variety of assets in regard to its futures trading offering. Everything from interest rates to forex to equities is up for grabs in the Japanese exchange platform. In total, the trading volumes for TFX products within the month of April was recorded at 3,905,631 contracts. The average daily trading volume for this, has been recorded at 178,604 contracts.
When one compares this to the numbers given within March of 2020, however, there’s a staggering loss of 61.6% of trade volumes. However, March of 2020 was an exceptional year for the finance industry, the world’s markets suffering a horrific crash amid the coronavirus threat. Exchanges across all segments of the industry saw massive increases in volumes, with some outright crashing due to the amount of traffic. This can be shown when one compares April 2020’s numbers to April 2019. Year-over-year, April managed to garner a 68.4% rise in volumes when compared to its 2019 counterpart, which is still an incredible rise.
Going Into Details
When you focus on FX daily futures contracts, in particular, the volumes have dropped month-over-month, as well, as one would expect. For the month of April, the exchange recorded 2,490,865 contracts, with the average daily trading volume for this month being classified at 113,222.
One this is measured against March of 2020, notable for experiencing more than 100% in volume gains, April’s numbers have dropped. Notably, it decreased by an impressive 61.3%. However, it should be noted that April of 2019’s numbers showed that the FX daily futures contracts increased by 35.2%, measured year-over-year.
When viewed through the equity index daily futures contract volumes, the volumes of Aprile has dropped by 62.2% when compared to March this year. The total trading volumes for April this year have been recorded at 1,390,279 contracts. This, in and of itself, is still significantly higher when compared to April of last year, to a staggering degree. When compared year-over-year, April 2020 managed to garner 232% in growth when compared to April 2019
Loss of Long-term Contracts
Lastly, April showed a total of 24,487 total three-month Euroyen futures contracts being traded. Despite the pattern made by other products, the trading volumes for this specific sector had dropped both yearly and monthly. When compared, the monthly drop had totaled 53.2%, with the yearly fall being 57.5%.
