Public broadcaster NHK has claimed that Japan’s finance ministry intends to establish an expert group next month to examine the feasibility of a digital currency of central bank (CBDC) or digital yen. NHK wasn’t specific about where it acquired its information. The Bank of Japan and other financial stakeholders are launching a digital yen pilot program, coinciding with the panel discussion about creating a framework for a digital currency.
Japan is Preparing to Lead Stricter Global Cryptocurrency Legislation
According to a report from Kyodo earlier this week, Japan, which is the Group of Seven (G-7) industrialized countries’ president this year, intends to adopt a more aggressive position on international cryptocurrency rules. The G-7 countries are looking for ways to regulate digital assets and protect investors from potential risks associated with these currencies. To guard against major losses for FTX Japan as well as its investors, Japan has already put in place strict rules. As it embraces a crypto-based future, the country is now developing policies and rules for stablecoins, NFTs, and DAOs. Japanese residents can feel secure in their investments while trading with digital assets.
While many other countries are only calmly shaking their heads amid the cold wind, Japan is in a unique position to play a significant role in the bitcoin business. The proposal put up by the Web3 project team of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan looks for opportunity rather than fear in times of crisis. The Japanese government, in other words, sees possibilities when many other countries may be overtaken by challenges.
According to Masaaki Taira, a politician in the House of Representatives and a member of the Liberal Democratic Party’s Web3 Project Team, “The FTX disaster had little impact on policymaking.” Coinbase and Kraken recently pulled out of the Japanese market, but Binance managed to acquire a local exchange despite its prior issues with regulators in Japan.
Japan is Promoting Web3 and Digital Yen as Part of its National Strategy
Japan continues to support Web3 technology even as other nations across the world express greater scepticism regarding cryptocurrencies. Dedicated politicians are putting up recommendations on a range of issues related to non-fungible tokens and Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAO) (NFT). The use of cryptocurrency in Japan and elsewhere may be greatly impacted by these rules. Furthermore, stablecoins, which are not now permitted on Japanese marketplaces, have a different route to go.
