Worldcoin, an exclusive digital identity and crypto project, is witnessing regulatory headwinds within the jurisdiction of Kenya. In this respect, the Kenyan authorities have halted the entirety of the local operations dealing with the respective project for collecting citizen data. On the 2nd of August this year, the country’s Ministry of Internal Security announced the respective news on Facebook.
Worldcoin Gets Suspended in Kenya, Confirms the Ministry of Internal Security
It noted that Kenya has suspended the operations carried out by Worldcoin. As per the ministry, this will be prolonged till the issuance of the certification by the relevant public authorities that the project has no risks. Minister Kithure Kindiki commented on this situation in a recent statement. According to the minister, the relevant agencies dealing with data protection, financial services, and security have started inquiries.
In addition to this, Kindiki also pointed out that the respective investigations have started to establish the legality and authenticity of the aforementioned operations. The minister emphasized that the country’s authorities are particularly apprehensive regarding Worldcoin’s methods for gathering important identification-related data. These methods include iris scanning for the provision of a digital ID.
The ministry moved on to disclose that the government intends to take adequate actions on any person who furthers, abets, aids, or otherwise gets involved with such operations. Reports formerly brought to the front that the project of Worldcoin was formally released on the 24th of July this year, following its continuous development for 3 years. Sam Altman, the chief executive officer of OpenAI (the platform responsible for creating the artificial intelligence-based chatbot called ChatGPT), is credited for Worldcoin’s establishment.
