US Crackdown Unveils Crypto Fraud Activities and Seizes $580M in Frauds
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has frozen an amount exceeding $580M from Southeast Asian pig-butchering scams. Particularly, the Chinese transnational networks are performing these scams. Thus, the Scam Center Strike Force of the U.S. Attorney’s Office carried out this development. The seizures denote one of the most prominent U.S. crackdowns up till now on cross-border crypto scam infrastructure.
The fraud networks drove scam compounds across Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, where they manipulated victims through different social engineering tactics. Usually, scammers contact targets through text messages or social media, building long-term trust. Additionally, they pushed victims to purchase legitimate crypto.
After that, they directed victims to transfer the respective assets to scamming investment platforms that work under the criminal groups. Leading to huge financial losses. In line with the estimate of the authorities, the U.S. citizens have lost a staggering $10B per year, signifying the extent of the threat.
Regulatory Enforcement Underscores Blockchain Traceability to Advance Anti-Scam Strategy
According to the U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, the Strike Force has shown swift progress within just 3 months, prioritizing the freezing and the forfeiture of digital assets. As per her, the objective is to return crypto to victims via legal forfeiture processes. Overall, amid the intensifying enforcement, authorities deem the new seizures as a crucial signal about the traceability and recovery of the illegally collected crypto proceeds across the globe.
