Equities Pull Back: S&P 500 Dips as Oil Jumps on Iran Negotiation Fears

U.S. equities are edging lower today as geopolitical concerns prompt a more cautious tone in the market. Specifically, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 312.36 points (-0.63%) to trade at 49,130.20. At the same time, the S&P 500 dropped 46.12 points (-0.65%) to 7,063.02. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq shed 158.07 points (-0.65%) to fall to 24,246.32. This moderate pullback is primarily driven by a sudden jump in oil prices as fears mount over Iran negotiations breaking down. As a result, investors are taking a slight risk-off approach, pausing the recent rally to digest the news.

Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU)

FBS The Best Forex Broker

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is showing a mild bearish reaction today after the index recently climbed and printed a new higher high. The overall structure is not bearish yet, but there is a chance of a healthy, standard correction developing alongside the broader market dip. The uncertainty surrounding the Iran negotiations has temporarily paused the index’s upward momentum. If the index extends this downward movement in the coming sessions, then the daily EMA 100 could become the logical downside target. However, given the relatively small percentage drop today, the index could easily stabilize and resume its upward trajectory once the immediate geopolitical noise settles.

Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY)

Occidental Petroleum (OXY) is directly benefiting from today’s jump in crude prices. With oil surging on fears that the Iran negotiations are breaking down, OXY is tracking the commodity higher and catching a strong bid. Technically, this fundamental catalyst has helped the stock bounce strongly from the daily EMA 100, meaning OXY might be set for another bullish leg as long as oil prices remain elevated. However, if geopolitical tensions ease and oil prices drop, causing another bearish push in the stock, then the daily EMA 200 and the psychological $50.00 mark are the key levels to watch as support.
