Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) Raises Targets

Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) stock fell 1.08% (As on May 19, 11:51:09 AM UTC-4, Source: Google Finance) after the company raised its annual sales and profit targets as shoppers snapped up its low-priced groceries and other essentials. The  sales at Walmart’s U.S. stores open at least a year rose 7.4%, excluding fuel, in the first quarter ended April 30, handily beating expectations of a 5.25% increase. Consolidated net income attributable to Walmart was $2.05 billion, a 24.8% decline from the first quarter of 2022’s $2.73 billion. Consolidated operating income was $5.3 billion, a decrease of 23%, negatively affected by $0.3 billion from divestitures.

Moreover, Walmart’s U.S. eCommerce sales grew 1% or 38% on a two-year stack. Sam’s Club comp sales increased 10.2%, and 17.4% on a two-year stack. Membership income increased 10.5%., the largest quarterly member sign-up on record for Sam’s Club in the U.S. Walmart International net sales were $23.8 billion, a decrease of $3.5 billion, or 13.0%, negatively affected by $5 billion due to divestitures.

WMT in the first quarter of FY 23 has reported the adjusted earnings per share of $1.47, beating the analysts’ estimates for the adjusted earnings per share of $1.32. The company had reported the adjusted revenue growth of 7.6 percent to $152.3 million in the first quarter of FY 23, beating the analysts’ estimates for revenue of $147.8 million. Profits were $1.7 billion, down 18.5 percent from the year-ago period.

Walmart now expects full-year earnings per share in the range of $6.10 to $6.20, up from its prior outlook of $5.90 to $6.05. Analysts were estimating $6.16 per share. The company also forecast net sales to rise about 3.5%, higher than its prior outlook of 2.5% to 3%. Capital expenditures will be at the upper end of 2.5% to 3% of net sales with a focus on supply chain, automation, customer-facing initiatives and technology.

Highlights from the international business included the launch of Flipkart Health+ in India, following Walmart’s acquisition of online pharmacy platform SastaSundar.com. The team recently launched the Flipkart Health+ app, which is available on low bandwidths so it’s useable for more people in more cities. And in Canada, we’re growing our number of primary care clinics to 87, and in partnership with TELUS Health, the company will launch digital pharmacy services. Meanwhile, Walmart said its Indian fintech platform PhonePe reached an annualised total payment volume (TPV) of $1 Tn for the first time during April 2022-March 2023 period.
