Crypto Edging Closer to Financial Threat, the FSB Says

The FSB’s outgoing leader, Klaas Knot, has warned that crypto may soon reach a level where it influences global finance. In a recent speech delivered in Spain, Knot spoke about the growing risks in the sector. He stated that, despite past issues, such as fraud, bankruptcies, and liquidity gaps, cryptocurrency had not yet posed a significant threat to global financial stability. But that may be changing.

The FSB has long tracked developments in digital assets, observing their rise with cautious interest. Knot said that recent trends show that crypto is no longer as detached from the traditional system as it was before. The line between crypto and traditional finance is becoming blurry, and this connection could amplify risk. These growing ties might bring crypto closer to becoming a global concern.

Stablecoin Issuers Hold Large Amounts Of U.S. Treasury Bonds

One key issue, Knot explained, is the evolution of stablecoins. He said some stablecoin issuers now hold large amounts of U.S. Treasury bonds. These are among the most widely used government debt instruments globally. Such exposure could more deeply link cryptocurrency to mainstream finance.

Knot said this exposure means regulators must pay closer attention to the stablecoin sector. Since real-world holdings, problems in crypto back these assets could ripple into wider markets. He noted that this is one part of the space that needs constant oversight. The concern is not just about the coins themselves but where they’re connected.

The FSB chair also focused on the role of everyday users in crypto’s growing reach. He said the lower barriers to entry mean more retail users are joining in. With the line between users and global markets becoming increasingly thin, any sudden shock could have far-reaching effects. The rise of retail access, combined with technical links to traditional banks and brokers, could create wider pressure.

Cross-Border Crypto Activity Calls For Coordinated Oversight

Knot’s speech pointed out that crypto’s international nature adds another layer of complexity. He said that crypto activity is not limited by borders, which makes regulation more challenging. The FSB’s global guidelines, he added, help offer a shared roadmap for national regulators. Without coordinated rules, risks may spread faster than they can be contained.

Not everyone sees crypto’s growth as a threat. Nick Jones, the leader of digital asset platform Zumo, responded to Knot’s comments. He said stablecoins and other digital tools could help improve the financial system. In his view, they offer quicker transactions, better security, and lower costs for users. Jones believes these tools can support, rather than disrupt, existing systems.

Jones said that with the right lens, cryptoassets show useful traits rather than danger. He argued that cryptographic methods provide users with more control and security in transactions. Faster processing times and smart contracts may improve the operation of certain services. However, he noted that these benefits rely on sound structure and responsible management.

Knot did not dismiss crypto’s usefulness but stressed the need for balance. He said innovation must come with oversight. Without the right guardrails, the risks could overtake the rewards.
