US Oil Prices Extend Losses After Trump Says Deal Possible After November Elections

US crude oil futures extended losses on Tuesday as investors remain optimistic that the United States and Iran are inching closer to a diplomatic resolution to the Middle East conflict.

October West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures tumbled $0.57, or 0.6%, to $95.21 per barrel at 19:16 GMT on Tuesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange. US oil prices have fallen around 10% in the last week but remain up 66% year-to-date.

Brent, the international benchmark for oil prices, fell below $100. November Brent crude futures declined $1.08, or 1.08%, to $99.27 a barrel on London’s ICE Futures exchange. Brent has erased almost 9% in the last week and remains up 63% this year.

During his highly anticipated speech at the United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump said he has a “big decision” to make on whether to “annihilate” Iran or seek an agreement.

“I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election because it doesn’t make sense for them not to,” Trump said in his address on Tuesday. “They’re waiting to see how I do in the midterm election. What they don’t realize is that I’m not running.”

White House officials met with an Iranian delegation, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian plans to visit New York City to meet with Trump.

Oil prices have been edging lower on expectations that both sides could be open to returning to the negotiating table.

In addition, investors have been cheering on news that oil is traversing through various paths across the Middle East. Ras Tanura, a port on Saudi Arabia’s east coast, had its busiest loading day since before the war started in late February. Almost 12 million barrels were loaded onto six supertankers.

In other energy commodities, October natural gas futures rocketed $0.16, or 5.64%, to $3 per million British thermal units (Btu). October gasoline futures ticked up $0.0201, or 0.58%, to $3.49 a gallon. October heating oil futures jumped $0.0474, or 1.01%, to $4.7549 per gallon.
