Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) announced on Wednesday that the first use-case of carbon credit exchange has been completed as part of its digital currency CBDC pilot. The Melbourne-based bank is one of the leading financial institutions in the country, making this a major milestone for the Australian economy.
The DFCRC is a 180M AUD Program Funded by Industry Partners, Universities, and the Australian Government
The Australian Reserve Bank (RBA) and the research center for Digital Finance Cooperative (DFCRC) launched Australia’s CBDC trial last year to investigate potential uses for a CBDC. Program funding for the DFCRC totals 180 million Australian dollars ($124.3 million), coming from colleges, business partners, and the government of Australia. Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), which are distributed by the Australian Government’s Energy Efficiency Regulator, are traded through a partnership between ANZ and Grollo Carbon Ventures.
By tokenizing current ACCUs, ANZ and GCV were able to test ACCUs in actual use. Following that, the tokenized ACCUs were bought using A$DC, ANZ’s stablecoin. The press release states that Australia’s Pilot CBDC served as an asset without risk to help finance the issue of A$DC. Carbon markets could be tokenized to speed up settling, lower relationship risk, and promote financial funding in climate solutions. The Australian Asset Exchange, Mastercard, Monoova, DigiCash, Commonwealth Bank, and other partners are participating in the pilot initiatives that the RBA has announced to evaluate use cases for its CBDC.

The Australian Reserve Bank has disclosed some initiatives that will create use cases for the eAUD, a digital Australian currency that is presently in testing. The central bank of Australia revealed the projects on Thursday morning according to local time. The projects will examine use cases such as offline payments, bond settlement, and securities dealing, among others. Many of the use cases involve commercial uses, but the CBDC experiments combine CBDCs from both wholesale and retail.
Tokenization May Increase Effectiveness and Openness, Says Nigel Dobson – ANZ
Carbon market tokenization can transform the industry by enhancing efficiency and openness while lowering risk. Tokenization can encourage investment in climate solutions by maintaining the distinctive qualities of the underlying initiatives, according to Nigel Dobson, Lead for ANZ Banking Services. Since the stablecoin is backed by risk-free CBDC, the risk associated with the counterparty is negligible due to the nearly instantaneous payment.
