Tech giant Apple has announced that it’s opening up the NFC chip technology that gives iPhone users access to make contactless payments in selected countries. However, the company says there will be applicable fees for the service.
Third-party providers in the UK and US are also included in the list of selected countries that will enjoy this service. Other countries include New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Brazil, and Australia.
The service is coming following a recent agreement with the EC to find a solution to an antitrust issue. Apple has been facing severe pressure from UK and US authorities for blocking such services, with the tech firm being accused of stifling competition.
Apple Was Facing Multi-billion Dollars Lawsuit For Restricting Access
Apple has finally bowed to pressure, as it will now allow users to pay third-party providers via contactless payments.
The service now allows developers to use the Secure Element to provide NFC contactless transactions within their apps on iPhone, different from Apple Wallet and Apple Pay.
However developers need to pay the associated fees, request the SE and NFC entitlement, and sign a commercial agreement with Apple.The process was banned by many banks in several regions for stifling competition from their proprietary apps.
Apple was initially facing multi-billion dollar fines for such restrictions. But Apple has quickly committed itself with a 10-year agreement to the EC to enable payment service providers and third-party mobile wallets to have access to the service. According to the European Commission, Apple’s agreement with the commission is now legally binding, which means the company will face serious legal actions if it negates the agreement.
Apple Is Expanding Access To The NFC Technology To Other Markets
The US Justice Department, as part of the lawsuit, also added access to the NFT technology as it accused Apple of monopolizing the smartphone market.
Following the change, developers now have access to offer in-app contactless services for a wide range of apps, including event tickets, merchant royalty, hotel keys, home keys, student IDs, corporate badges, closed-loop transit, car keys, and in-store payments.
In a press release, Apple says it will start supporting government IDs in the future. The change will enable Apple to open iPhone NFC payments to third-party service providers.
Apple is also expanding its access to other markets. The Tech giant is now taking proactive measures to stay within the confines of the law while offering its services in a way that will not contravene any regulations.
