US Attorney’s Office in Columbia revealed the successful civil forfeiture action aimed at recovering cryptocurrency proceeds from this elaborate scam. Known as ‘pig butchering,’ these schemes involve scammers building trust with victims through online communications, then convincing them to invest in fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes. ‘Butchering’ refers to the point at which scammers make off with the victim’s funds, leaving them financially and emotionally devastated.

US Attorney Matthew Graves emphasized the importance of holding criminal organizations accountable, whether they operate domestically or internationally.  Special Agent incharge Stacey Moy from FBI’s San Diego Field Office echoed these sentiments, highlighting the evolving techniques law enforcement agencies are employing to combat such scams. Moy noted that the increasing use of pig-butchering scams to defraud common people is despicable.

Binance’s involvement was crucial in the investigation and seizure process. Through collaboration and intelligence sharing, Binance Investigations and Case teams helped uncover leads and facilitated the seizure of $2.5 million. The amount is equivalent to 2,546,415.01 USDT. It was recovered from two accounts controlled by a perpetrator in Thailand. This recovery marks a significant step towards compensating victims and deterring future fraudulent activities.

Extensive Cooperation Leads to Successful Asset Seizure and Victim Compensation

The civil forfeiture action, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Blaylock, Jr. and attorneys Jonas Lerman and Stefanie Schwartz, highlights extensive cooperation among federal and international agencies. FBI offices in Boston, San Diego, and Bangkok, along with the Royal Thai Police, played key roles in this operation.

Civil forfeiture enables the United States to seize assets from perpetrators, including those abroad, to punish and deter criminal activities. It also promotes enhanced cooperation among federal, local, tribal, as well as foreign law enforcement agencies and aims to recover assets to compensate victims.

People who believe they are, by any way, victims of cybercrime, including cryptocurrency scams, romance scams, investment scams, and ‘pig butchering’ fraud, are encouraged to contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
