Coinbase Adds Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana Futures
The crypto derivatives lineup by Coinbase in Canada includes futures including Bitcoin ($BTC), Ethereum ($ETH), Solana ($SOL) and more. Perpetual futures allow traders to maintain positions without the conventional expiration associated with dated futures. Coinbase said the products are designed to provide Canadian investors with tools for speculation and hedging. The exchange noted that Canadian traders have historically had to rely on offshore or unregulated platforms to access certain crypto derivatives. Now they have a regulated exchange available with multiple trading pairs.
The Canadian offering also includes up to 10x leverage, according to Coinbase Institutional. Leverage can increase the size of a trader position relative to the margin posted, but it can also amplify potential losses.
Commodity and Index Futures Expand Coinbase Offering
Beyond crypto assets, Coinbase has introduced five commodity futures covering markets such as gold, silver, and oil. The platform also offers index futures, including the Coinbase 50 Index (COIN50). This will give eligible traders exposure to a broader basket of crypto assets through a single derivative contract.
Coinbase has been expanding its derivatives business across multiple asset classes. Its derivatives platform currently provides access to crypto futures as well as commodity and index products (in specific jurisdictions only).
The new derivatives offering is not available to every Canadian Coinbase customer. Coinbase states that eligible Canadian users must satisfy requirements based on their province of residence. These include having at least $5 million in net financial assets, excluding real estate, or being a registered investment adviser or dealer.
For Canadian users, derivatives balances are held with Coinbase Financial Markets. However, while spot balances remain with Coinbase Canada. Coinbase said the new launch represents the first time eligible Canadian investors can access regulated crypto derivatives directly through its platform.
