Kroger Co (NYSE:KR) Posts Mixed Results

Kroger Co (NYSE:KR) stock rose 3.29% (As on September 8, 11:42:03 AM UTC-4, Source: Google Finance) after the company’s slew of announcements, including a settlement to resolve opioid-related claims against the grocery giant. Kroger said it would take a $1.4 billion charge to second-quarter earnings as a result of the settlement. Kroger and Albertsons, which are set to merge, announced the companies would sell more than 400 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers to complete their tie-up. The company has posted mixed result for the second quarter of FY 23.

The company has announced a new in-house advertising platform for Kroger Precision Marketing allowing for greater flexibility to serve clients and improve outcomes for brands. KR in the second quarter of FY 23 has reported the adjusted earnings per share of 96 cents, beating the analysts’ estimates for the adjusted earnings per share of 92 cents, according to analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research. The company had reported the adjusted revenue growth of 1.1 percent to $33.85 billion in the second quarter of FY 23, missing the analysts’ estimates for revenue of $34.25 billion. Gross margin was 21.8% of sales for the second quarter. The FIFO gross margin rate, excluding fuel, increased 35 basis points compared to the same period last year. The LIFO charge for the quarter was $4 million, compared to a LIFO charge of $148 million for the same period last year. Fuel operating profit declined $192 million compared to the same period last year, primarily due to the cycling of historically high fuel results from a year ago. Kroger’s net total debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio is 1.31, compared to 1.63 a year ago. The company’s net total debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio target range is 2.30 to 2.50.

Kroger expects full-year earnings to be in the range of $4.45 to $4.60 per share. For fiscal year 2023, Identical sales without fuel of 1.0% – 2.0%, with underlying growth of 2.5% – 3.5% after adjusting for the effect of Express Scripts, Capital expenditures of $3.4 – $3.6 billion, Adjusted Free Cash Flow of $2.5 – $2.7 billion and Adjusted FIFO Operating Profit of $5.0 – $5.2 billion
