BlackRock’s exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have surpassed Grayscale in on-chain holdings for the first time. This marks a significant shift in the crypto investment world. BlackRock now holds the largest collective amount of cryptocurrency assets through its ETFs, overtaking Grayscale, which had held that position for years. This takes into account Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs both launched in 2024.

BlackRock Dominates Crypto Market, Reaching $21.2 Billion in Assets
As per Arkham, BlackRock USA’s ETFs identified as IBIT and ETHA currently distribute approximately $21,217,107,987. This is slightly more than Grayscale’s ETFs which comprise of GBTC, BTC Mini, ETHE & ETH Mini with total assets under management totaling to $21,202,480,698 as well. This change occurred much earlier than many analysts has predicted. Furthermore, it underlined the dominance of the major ETF providers such as BlackRock.

In the opinion of James Butterfill, the Head of Research at CoinShares, BlackRock has been inevitable, especially after there is the introduction of the spot Bitcoin ETF approximately eight months ago. These trends accelerated even further with the launch of spot Ethereum ETFs in July. BlackRock’s success can be attributed to market dominance and efficient marketing and distribution tactics such as promoting in financial outlets and cooperating with registered investment advisors.
BlackRock’s Low Fees and High Inflows Outshine Grayscale’s Struggles
In contrast, Grayscale has experienced some issues, especially in the case of ETHE which reported $2.3bn outflow. Despite this, Grayscale has still recently been seen advertising its products in such strategic location as airports and some stations in New York City. However, its spot Ethereum ETF has a fee of 2.5%, which is not favorable when it is compared with BlackRock’s low fee of 0.25%.
Ethereum Mini Trust, another product by Grayscale, is cheaper at 0.15% cost basis and has observed $222 million in net inflows. However, the current trend in investing makes it almost impossible for Grayscale to reclaim its former glory, considering investors will shift to cheaper options such as offered by BlackRock.
This development further points to the fact that there is increasing rivalry in the cryptocurrency investment sector, with financial titans such as BlackRock entering the market front and center and transforming the landscape.
