CoinGecko’s report points out that more than 1.8M projects in the crypto sector failed during the first quarter of this year. This figure has even surpassed the number witnessed throughout the past year. Particularly, during 2024, up to 1.4M crypto projects collapsed. Hence, the current data presents a quite grim picture of the ongoing boom-and-bust cycle.

Cryptocurrency Failures Reach 50% Since 2021, with 3.7M Projects Defunct

Particularly, the failed crypto projects comprise 52.7% of the total projects listed since the year 2021. In this respect, 3.7M out of the cumulative 7M crypto tokens since then have now become defunct. Additionally, the pace and scale of the respective collapses have also witnessed a sheer rise during the past 2 years.

Particularly, just in 2024, the market recorded nearly 3M latest crypto project launches, led mostly by the arrival of the entities like pump.fun. Such platforms virtually permitted everyone to develop meme coins and analogous low-effort crypto tokens without significant entry barriers. This led to a flood of crypto projects that were majorly deficient in long-term viability and ultimately ceased working.

This Quarter Shows 49.7% of Crypto Project Failures Recorded During 5 Years

While 2024 set records in the case of exclusive project launches, the year was also marked by a noteworthy increase in failures. Hence, as the report discloses that almost 1.4M crypto coins were pushed toward inactivity during 2024, comprising thirty-eight percent of the total failures observed since 2021. Nevertheless, the Q1 2025 has already surpassed this figure with 1.8M crypto project failures. Thus, this quarter singly accounts for 49.7% of all failures in the crypto market over 5 years.
