American Express Purchases Tock For $400 Million

American Express is purchasing Tock, a restaurant reservation platform owned by Squarespace, for $400 million. AmEx wants to enhance its presence in the dining sector, which saw $100 billion in card usage last year.

The all-cash agreement, announced on Friday, will expand upon the credit card company’s purchase of online restaurant booking platform Resy in 2019.

The Deal Will Help Restaurants Focus On Big Spenders

Resy aids AmEx cardholders in receiving preferred access to particular restaurants, such as special bookings, early alerts, or discounts on specific bookings.

The purchase of Tock will include an additional 7,000 wineries, restaurants, and other hospitality entities within AmEx’s network. It will also enable restaurants to go for VIP customers who are naturally prolific spenders.

The credit card company has often provided more incentives to validate higher annual expenses than its competitors, a strategy vital to meeting AmEx’s growth objectives. It will help the company to attract wealthy consumers and enhance customer engagement.

Cristopher Kennedy, an analyst from William Blair, stated that these experiences act as a distribution pathway, as they bring more customers to the brand.

AmEx is also acquiring Rooam, a contactless financial platform used by music venues, bars, restaurants, and other companies, for an unnamed amount.

Kennedy said these purchases should support the firm’s endeavors in the small and medium business market. AmEx still believes the segment will be profitable, notwithstanding a recent decrease in its expenditure growth.

American Express Stocks Have Risen 23% This Year

Squarespace, a web development platform, paid about $400 million for Tock when it purchased it in 2021, similar to what it will receive from the sale.

The agreement will make Squarespace leaner as it gets set to go private under Permira in a deal worth nearly $6.9 billion.

This year, AmEx stocks have risen 23%, while the S&P 500 index (.SPX) has seen a near 15% increase as of Thursday’s close.

Last month, American Express introduced its first company credit card in Nigeria via a partnership with Nigeria-based neobank O3 Capital. This will enhance access to US dollar dealings in West Africa.

The card has a spending cap of $10,000 and allows a repayment period of up to 45 days for international purchases.

Mohammed Badi, The President of Amex, noted that the inaugural American Express company card in the most populated African nation will give the firm another way to help local companies with their growth ambitions. He said that American Express is thrilled to continue to expand its foothold in Nigeria and across Africa.

Badi also stated that the company wants to strengthen its foothold in Africa to 42 nations from the current 30, asserting increased interest from small companies and customers for the business cards.
