Bali Targets Crypto Payments by Foreign Tourists

The government of the Indonesian province of Bali has announced taking some radical measures to confront the increasing crypto adoption within the jurisdiction. The reports have pointed out that the authorities are taking a hostile approach against the use of crypto assets for payment purposes.

Bali Province of Indonesia Moves Forward to Penalize Foreign Tourists Utilizing Crypto Assets for Payments

As per the local reports, the jurisdiction of the region is witnessing an increase in the usage of crypto for payments at several places nowadays. Majority of the tourists utilize these assets to pay for using services and products at shopping centers, tourism destinations, restaurants, hotels, as well as other such places.

Wayan Koster, the Governor of Bali province has recently spoken on this on the 28th of May in this respect. According to the governor, the foreign tourists engaged in such activities are behaving inappropriately. He added that such people do not have any permission for these operations in line with their visa permits. Hence, they cannot use cryptocurrency for payment operations.

He added that, if they do so and infringe the rest of the provisions they are supposed to comply with, the authorities will take strict actions against them. The governor made these remarks when he appeared at a recent press conference covering the tourism development within the province. The attendees of the respective conference took into account Putu Jayan Danu Putra (the chief inspector general of Bali Police) and the Head of Bank Indonesia (BI). Trisno Nugroho (the Representative Office of Bali) and several other relevant parties were also present there.

Governor Highlights Punishment for Using Crypto for Payments

In the words of Koster, stringent measures take into account administrative sanctions, deportation, termination of business premises, criminal penalties, and so on. Koster mentioned that the ban on the utilization of currencies except for the rupiah of Indonesia is in line with (Law No. 7 of 2011 (the country’s law concerning currency). The respective law asserts that if a person utilizes currency types other than the native currency of the jurisdiction, the authorities can implement a one-year imprisonment for the crime.

In addition to this, the maximum fine for this crime is nearly Rp200M (approximately $13,300). Koster moved on to claim that those who are engaged in accomplishing foreign exchange-related business operations without seeking permission from the country’s central bank are subject to the punishment of at least 1-year or at maximum 5-year imprisonment.
