Crypto Mining Crackdown in China Spreads to Yunnan

Crypto mining in China has become a risky venture for companies operating in the sector. A few weeks after the State Council launched a crackdown on crypto mining operations in Beijing, the same seems to be spreading into other provinces.

The recent crackdown on mining operations led by the State Council resulted in the closure of prominent mining firms such as Huobi Mall and BTC.TOP. These firms stated that they would venture into overseas markets such as North American because of the heightened regulatory risk in China.

Over the weekend, Chinese social media handles were filled with reports of a crypto mining crackdown in the province. According to a report allegedly issued by the Energy Administration of Yunnan on Friday, a probe would be conducted regarding the use of cheap and unauthorized energy by crypto miners.

A publication by the Science and Technology Innovation Express News also added that the miners who were found culpable of the misappropriation of energy would face the consequences for their actions.

According to the notice, the deadline was at the end of June for bitcoin miners to comply with the energy regulation laws. Many publications reached out to the Energy Administration of Yunnan on Saturday, but no comments were issued.

Other Provinces Enhancing Mining Regulations

The regulations made by the Yunnan authorities are not the first in China. Yunnan is the fourth-largest bitcoin mining hub in the country, but other provinces have also followed suit to regulate the energy used in bitcoin mining activities.

Qinghai, the Northwestern province in China, has ordered the closure of all bitcoin mining activities because of energy concerns. Another major mining hub, Inner Mongolia, has also put measures in place to prevent crypto mining activities. The Sichuan province is also researching the bitcoin mining industry, which means that new regulations may be imposed soon.

Energy consumption in bitcoin mining activities has been a huge concern in recent weeks, with many countries regulating the practice because of the imbalances it causes to the power grid. Environmentalists also believe that bitcoin mining poses a threat to the environment by harming the carbon footprint.

Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO who suspended bitcoin payments for Tesla vehicles because of environmental concerns, recently held a meeting with bitcoin miners from North America. The meeting was aimed to create a clear roadmap on how bitcoin mining would be transformed to enhance energy efficiency.
