Decent performance drives TJX Companies Inc(NYSE: TJX)

TJX Companies Inc (NYSE: TJX) has reported the adjusted earnings per share of $1.03 in the fourth quarter of FY 17, missing the analysts’ estimates for the adjusted earnings per share of $1. The company had reported the adjusted revenue of $9.5 billion in the fourth quarter of FY 17, beating the analysts’ estimates for revenue of $9.47 billion.

In the fourth quarter of FY 17, TJX’s consolidated pretax profit margin was 11.6%, which is a 0.3 percentage point decrease compared with the prior year. The merchandise margin grew significantly but was more than offset due to losses related to TJX’s inventory hedges as well as incremental supply chain costs versus last year.

During the fiscal year ended January 28th, 2017, TJX has increased its store count by 198 stores and has increased the square footage by 4% over the same period last year.

TJX Companies expects for the 53-week fiscal year ending February 3rd, 2018, the adjusted earnings per share in the range of $3.69 to $3.78 per share. This would represent a 5% to 7% growth over the prior year’s adjusted $3.53, which excludes the combined $.07 impact of the debt extinguishment charge and pension settlement charge.

For the first quarter of Fiscal 2018, TJX expects the diluted earnings per share to be in the range of $.76 to $.78, compared to $.76 last year. This projection includes an assumption that wage increases will negatively impact earnings per share growth by 3%.

TJX Companies plans to increase the regular quarterly dividend on its common stock to be declared in April 2017 and payable in June 2017 to $.3125 per share, subject to the approval of TJX’s Board of Directors. This increase would represent a 20% increase in the current dividend per share.

Additionally, TJX Companies has announced the plan to repurchase approximately $1.3 to $1.8 billion of TJX stock during the FY 18. The $1.8 billion is remaining at FY 17 year end under the company’s existing stock repurchase program, TJX’s Board of Directors has approved a new stock repurchase program that authorizes the repurchase of up to an additional $1.0 billion of TJX common stock from time to time. It represents approximately 2% of the company’s outstanding shares at current prices. During the fourth quarter, TJX has spent a total of $525 million to repurchase TJX stock, retiring 6.9 million shares.
