The EUR/GBP cross rises towards 0.8320 in Monday’s early European session as traders weigh central bank policy dynamics and regional economic data. However, the euro’s upside remains capped by speculation of aggressive European Central Bank (ECB) rate cuts to address the Eurozone’s faltering economic growth.

Friday’s weak Eurozone PMI data amplified expectations for a half-point rate cut by the ECB in December, with JP Morgan strategist Matthew Landon noting the data “puts a 50-basis-point cut on the table.” Further fueling speculation, ECB Governing Council member Martins Kazaks suggested that the central bank should ease monetary policy next month, given economic weakness.
On the other hand, the British pound) faces its own challenges. UK Retail Sales data showed a sharp 0.7% MoM drop in October, significantly missing market expectations of -0.3%. Combined with disappointing UK PMI figures, this has bolstered dovish bets on the Bank of England (BoE) ahead of its December meeting.
However, losses for the GBP may be cushioned by BoE officials maintaining a cautious stance. Traders will closely watch speeches by MPC members Clare Lombardelli, Swati Dhingra, and Huw Pill for insights into the central bank’s policy outlook.
Trade Idea:
Buy the EUR/GBP currency pair around 0.8315, targeting 0.8355, with a stop-loss at 0.8295. Diverging ECB and BoE policy expectations could continue to support the pair soon.
