EUR/GBP Steadies as Eurozone Economic Data Awaited

During early European trading hours on Tuesday, the EUR/GBP pair showed slight gains around 0.8535. The positive news came from German Retail Sales, surpassing expectations. However, the Euro (EUR) struggled to benefit from the upbeat report fully.

German Retail Sales rose by 0.3% YoY in March, rebounding from a 2.7% decline in February. Monthly, there was a 1.8% increase in March, contrasting with the 1.9% drop seen previously.

Investor attention now turns to the upcoming Eurozone Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth figures for Q1 and the initial reading of the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). Any softening in these indicators might prompt expectations of earlier interest rate cuts by the European Central Bank (ECB), potentially weighing on the EUR.

On the other side, Bank of England (BoE) Chief Economist Huw Pill’s recent comments cautioned against premature interest rate cuts, supporting the British Pound (GBP). However, market sentiment still anticipates a rate cut from the BoE in August, which could limit downside pressure on the EUR/GBP cross.

Trade Idea:

Given the upcoming economic data releases and contrasting central bank stances, traders should closely monitor EUR/GBP for potential trading opportunities, especially around crucial data announcements that may impact market sentiment towards the Euro and the Pound.
