The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) of the United Kingdom (UK) has announced a groundbreaking development for the crypto users. As per the UK FCA, it will permit retail users to access crypto exchange-traded notes (cETNs) from the 8th of October onwards. In its official press release, the UK FCA has asserted that this development is a cautious yet forward-looking move toward increased inclusivity in the crypto landscape of the country. In addition to this, the initiative also underscores the UK’s commitment to broaden its financial sphere and facilitate users with regulated crypto products.

UK-Based Retail Investors Get Access to Crypto ETNs
The financial watchdog of the United Kingdom also mentioned that, from the 8th of October, the retail consumers will be provided access to crypto exchange-traded notes (cETNs). With this development, the FCA-approved Recognized Investment Exchanges (RIEs) in the UK will be given access to cETNs. At the same time, the agency will also implement financial promotion rules on the respective entities to guarantee that the users get non-misleading and accurate information.
While discussing this development, FCA’s Executive Director of Payments and Digital Finance, David Geale, also reinforced the significance of this move. The executive asserted that, since the implementation of restrictions over cETNs in the retail market, the respective sector has evolved, becoming more mainstream. Keeping this in view, the FCA is offering more choice to the consumers while guaranteeing their protection.

Additionally, despite this permission given by the FCA, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) will not cover cETNs. Hence, no compensation will be guaranteed in the case of the providers’ failure. Keeping this in view, the investors have been urged by the FCA to take into consideration the potential risks before making investments.
Striking Balance Between Crypto Innovation and User Protection
According to the UK FCA, after the permission granted to the professional investors to reach cETNs listed in the jurisdiction, the latest retail inclusion is a noteworthy development. Nevertheless, the prohibition on the crypto derivatives will stay intact for the retail investors. Even then, the exclusive announcement is considered one of the major steps to balance innovation with user protection in the growing digital asset era.
