There may be some environmental factors, which may control the negotiation process. However, there are also some factors, which you can control. If you can use the controllable factors in a positive way, they may help with the negotiation. Talking in a relaxed feeling, you will feel it much easier to talk about your objectives with the negotiation.

Prepare Yourself for Failure

Of course, you have to walk into the negotiation room with an optimistic mind. However, when you realize that the negotiation cannot end up with agreement because of uncontrollable factors, be prepared to walk away, instead of negotiating further. You have to realize that the other party also needs you. It is very likely that the other party will contact you again. If this happens, you are at advantageous position.

Sometimes, you have to prepare to walk since the first time you come into the negotiation room. However, sometimes the decision is prompted by what happens during the negotiation. If you know that the negotiation goes wrong, make sure you walk away first, but use the right language. Do not shout to the other side!

Articulate Your Interests Clearly

Even though both of you have been in the same room, never assume that the other sides understand your interests. Never make an assumption that you understand their interests. Therefore, make sure that you articulate your interests in a clear and understandable way. This is the best way to solve the differences that occur between you and the other side.

Listen Carefully

In a two-way communication, no one should have dominated. That is people also say that a successful negotiator is a good listener. Make sure you listen carefully when the other side is articulating his/her interests, reactions, and deal points. Do not interrupt when someone is speaking. If possible, try to encourage the other side to convey his/her interests first. Then, you will get your turn.

These tips for successful negotiation are mostly related to how you communicate with the other side. The point is that you need to create an environment, where both of you feel comfortable in talking each other. Therefore, both of you can find the solutions to the existing problems and make agreements on what both of you have to do.
