J B Hunt Transport Services Inc (NASDAQ:JBHT) stock rallies 19.50% (As on October 16, 11:22:27 AM UTC-4, Source: Google Finance) after the company reported a 12% rise in third-quarter profit, driven by ongoing cost-cutting measures initiated in response to a freight downturn in the industry. The trucking industry has been in decline since 2022, driven by excess capacity, falling freight rates, and modest growth in shipment volumes. Experts anticipate the downturn will persist, with tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump adding pressure and delaying recovery. The Arkansas-based company reported net earnings of $170.9 mln for the quarter ended September 30, up from $152.1 mln, a year ago. The company discussed the company’s $100 million cost-cutting initiative, announced in the previous quarter, and noted that more than $20 million in structural costs had been cut from the business in the third quarter.
JBHT in the third quarter of FY25 has reported the adjusted earnings per share of $1.76, beating the analysts’ estimates for the adjusted earnings per share of $1.46. The company had reported the adjusted revenue decline of 0.5 percent to $3.05 billion in the third quarter of FY25, beating the analysts’ estimates for revenue of $3.03 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Revenue performance was driven by a 1% and 4% decline in gross revenue per load in the intermodal and truckload segments, respectively, the company said. J.B. Hunt also noted an 8% decrease in load volume during the reported quarter in its Integrated Capacity Solutions segment and 1% in the Dedicated Contract Services segment, as well as 8% fewer stops in Final Mile Services business. These items were partially offset by an improvement in DCS productivity of 3%, a 9% increase in revenue per load in ICS and 14% load growth in JBT. Current quarter total operating revenue, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, decreased less than 1% versus the comparable period.
Moreover, operating income for the current quarter increased 8% to $242.7 million versus $224.1 million for the third quarter 2024. Operating income increased primarily due to structural cost removal as part of the efforts to lower the cost to serve, improved productivity across the organization and lower purchase transportation costs compared to third quarter 2024. The net capital expenditures for the nine months ended September 30, 2025 approximated $490.9 million compared to $488.1 million for the same period 2024. At September 30, 2025, JBHT had cash and cash equivalents of approximately $52 million.
