Multichain, a cross-chain protocol, has reportedly halted its services on the 7th of July. Multichain stops services following the confirmation of the abnormal fund movements from the MPC address of the platform. In this respect, Peckshield (a prominent blockchain security platform) reported the exploit that targeted Multichain.
Multichain Terminates Services as an Exploit of up to $126M Hits It
According to the data provided by Peckshield, the cumulative amount of the exploited funds from the platform was nearly $126M. The blockchain security firm also disclosed that the attacker shifted funds from the Moonriver (MOVR) as well as Fantom (FTM) bridge thereof. After the incident of the exploit, Multichain cautioned the consumers regarding it.
The platform said that the users should revoke the entirety of the approvals dealing with the protocol. On the other hand, Fantom Foundation also spoke on the matter. The company revealed that it was assessing the circumstances in which the exploit was successfully carried out. In addition to this, it also claimed to offer updates with time. Although the company has not yet offered any details regarding the incident, the first reactions provided by the community members are scary.
In light of that, the private key of the protocol has been compromised. CertiK, the smart contract auditor of Multichain, suggested that the attack was carried out because of the compromise on the private key. Loki Zeng, an on-chain detective, also discussed the matter. The on-chain sleuth noted that the transaction of the assets took a long period to accomplish.

In Zeng’s point of view, the exploiter might have secured full control of the private key remains of the protocol. Web3 Knowledge Graph Protocol 0xScope brought to the front that the exploit’s effect extends to the rest of the chains such as ETHW, Conflux, Dogechain, and Kava. The company added that several stablecoin assets on the respective chains were eventually depegged.
MULTI Slumps by 16% after Exploit
In the meantime, the ICE crypto project’s Daniele Sestagalli asserted that the group has determined to burn ICE tokens of up to $1.85M worth. The tokens to be burned have been impacted by the exploit. In Sestagalli’s words, the platform would airdrop the tokens to Fantom Multichain consumers after burning them, in the form of an exclusive token WAGMI. This incident also impacted the value of Multichain’s MULTI Token as it dipped by more than 16% to touch $2.60.
