Although growth has slowed in the U.S. market, Netflix (NFLX) announced that it expects to attract 6.1 million new subscribers through March 2016 due to its expansion into other countries.
The previous quarter, Netflix made the decision to push aggressively into international markets, which caused subscriber numbers to swell and shares to rise 7%. By the end of December 2015, Netflix subscriptions had jumped to 74.8 million.
Now, the company expects to bring in another 6.1 million subscribers by March through expansions into other countries outside of China. Netflix is still trying to determine the best way to introduce its streaming services to the Chinese market.
Netflix’s estimate of new subscribers is more aggressive than analysts’ estimates, which are forecasting 4.94 million new subscribers.
The company was unable to meet its expected subscriber numbers in the United States for the second quarter in a row, but its gain in international markets eased investor concerns over slow domestic growth.
Following the announcement that Netflix added 17 million new subscribers in 2015, company shares rose. Of the 17 million subscribers, 12 million were overseas customers.
Netflix shares jumped to 7.7% to trade at $116.21 in extended trading. By the time trading had closed on Tuesday, the stock had already gained 3.7% and reached $107.89.
