Nissan increases global EV targets amid plans to raise US localization

Nissan Motor has raised its goals for electrified car sales. The automaker said it would raise the power train production within the United States. The company is looking to catch up against its competitors in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing industry currently dominated by Tesla.

Nissan increases global EV targets

Nissan Motor is an automaker based in Japan. The company was among the first automakers that ventured into electric vehicle manufacturing through its all-battery-powered Leaf. However, the firm has struggled to remain competitive in the EV market.

Nissan has been struggling alongside other legacy automakers amid increased competition from several new entrants in the industry. Moreover, Tesla has remained in the lead of EV manufacturing, accounting for most EV sales globally.

Nissan is now looking to scoop a massive share of the EV market with electric vehicles. These vehicles also include advanced hybrid e-power cars that Nissan anticipates will make up for more than 55% of the company’s global sales by 2030. The new target is an increase from the previous goal of 50%.

Nissan is planning to have 27 new electrified vehicles by 2030. Out of this number, 19 will be all-battery EVs, according to a statement released by the automaker. This is also an increase from the previous plan of having 23 electrified vehicles that include 15 all-battery EVs.

Nissan currently produces electric vehicles at its EV production plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The automaker plans to create electric power trains at its plant in Decherd, Tennessee. According to a statement issued by the Chief Operating Officer, Ashwani Gupta, the plant will help the automaker meet requirements for the Inflation Reduction Act.

According to Gupta, Nissan believes these new changes will enable the company to comply with this act because of the localization of operations, which will start in 2026.

Tesla is still dominating the EV market

Tesla has continued to dominate the EV market. Tesla’s manufacturing plant situated in Brandenburg near Berlin is currently producing 4,000 cars each week, according to a statement by the company. This production rate is three weeks ahead of schedule per a recent production plan from the company.

The output from this plant is currently a third of the output for Model Y in the company’s Shanghai plant, where Tesla planned to have an average total output of 13,000 Model Ys each week. This number was around 1,000 below the maximum capacity. The company’s production plan also proposes an additional 7,000 Model 3s in February and March.

Tesla had also revealed plans to increase production in its Brandenburg plant to 4,000 in the week of March 13 and then grow this to over 5,000 by the end of June. The weekly production in October last year was 2,000 units, while the same was 3,000 in December.

The maximum production capacity for the company’s planned Brandenburg plant is 500,000 cars each year, which is equivalent to 10,000 each week.
