NZD/USD Advances as Softer US Payroll Expectations Weigh on Greenback

The New Zealand Dollar strengthened against the US Dollar on Friday, with NZD/USD climbing toward the 0.5970 area after recovering from earlier lows near 0.5930. The pair benefited from renewed pressure on the Greenback as investors shifted attention toward the upcoming US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report and reassessed expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

Markets are anticipating that the US economy added around 62,000 jobs in April, a sharp slowdown compared to the 178,000 jobs created in March. Traders remain cautious that a weaker-than-expected labor report could undermine the hawkish tone adopted by the Federal Reserve during its latest policy meeting. Several policymakers have recently argued in favor of removing the central bank’s long-standing easing bias, reinforcing expectations that interest rates may remain elevated for longer.

Despite lingering geopolitical tensions, the US Dollar struggled to attract sustained safe-haven demand. Concerns resurfaced on Thursday after renewed exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran raised doubts over the durability of the current ceasefire agreement. However, US President Donald Trump downplayed the incidents, insisting that the ceasefire remains intact and urging Tehran to finalize a peace agreement.

Meanwhile, Oil prices recovered moderately from Thursday’s lows but stayed well below recent peaks. West Texas Intermediate crude traded around $91 per barrel, while Brent crude remained below the important $100 level. Lower energy prices tend to support the New Zealand Dollar because New Zealand relies heavily on imported oil, reducing pressure on inflation and import costs.

Domestic economic data also provided support for the Kiwi. Earlier this week, New Zealand reported an unexpected decline in the unemployment rate to 5.3% in the first quarter, alongside stronger-than-expected labor cost growth. The figures reinforced speculation that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand may consider another interest rate increase in the near term to contain inflationary pressures.
