Orange Juice Futures Extend Losses After Weak Consumer Demand

Orange juice futures continued their downward trend on Tuesday as the agricultural commodity took a modest hit on growing demand concerns. Since flirting with $3 last month, orange juice prices have been slumping, recording a weekly loss of about 5%. But prices are still having a terrific start to the year.

July orange juice futures tumbled $0.015, or 0.56%, to $2.655 per pound to finish the Tuesday trading session on the US ICE Futures exchange. Orange juice prices are up 30% year-to-date and have rallied 44% over the past 12 months. Orange juice hit an all-time high of $2.9582 in May.

According to data from the Florida Department of Citrus, US orange juice retail sales tumbled 13.% this season to 27.17 million equivalent gallons.

With inflation continuing to ravage consumers’ budgets, shoppers might be seeking out alternatives, as many market analysts note that orange juice has become a luxury good at the breakfast table.

The consensus is that orange juice prices will unlikely return to their pre-crisis levels.

But the losses were capped on a new report forecasting that Brazil’s orange output would decline about 2% this season to below 304 million boxes. That said, experts note that orange juice prices typically slide at this time of the year due to the beginning of the harvest season.

In the near term, analysts say that prices will continue to fall, with $2.40 being a critical support level for the crop.

In other agricultural commodities, July corn futures surged $0.10, or 1.67%, to $6.075 per bushel. July wheat futures tacked on $0.0325, or 0.52%, to $6.2725 a bushel. July soybean futures edged up $0.03, or 0.22%, to $13.53 per bushel.
