The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the Philippines is taking decisive action against cryptocurrency giant Binance. In the latest development, it has requested the removal of Binance applications from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store in the country. In letters, the SEC Philippines addressed Google and Apple, citing concerns over the security of Filipino investors’ funds.

Regulatory Concerns Prompt SEC Action Against Binance in the Philippines
SEC Chairperson Emilio B. Aquino emphasized the threat posed by Binance’s platforms, stating that the sale of unregistered securities and operating as an unregistered broker violates the country’s Securities Regulation Code. Aquino stressed that removing these applications is crucial to prevent further proliferation of illegal activities and to safeguard the investing public from potential economic harm.
This move follows previous efforts by the SEC, including a request to the National Telecommunications Commission to block access to Binance’s websites in the Philippines. The SEC has been actively warning the public against investing in and using Binance since November 2023, signaling growing regulatory scrutiny over the platform’s operations in the country.

Binance offers a wide range of financial products and services, including spot trading with leverage, futures contracts, option contracts, cryptocurrency savings accounts, staking services, and platforms for initial coin offerings. Despite its extensive offerings, Binance has not obtained a license from the SEC to solicit investments or operate an exchange for buying and selling securities, as required by Philippine law.
SEC Philippines Protecting Filipino Investors Amidst Regulatory Scrutiny of Binance
The SEC advises Filipino investors with holdings in Binance to promptly close their positions or transfer their cryptocurrency assets to registered crypto wallets or accounts with duly authorized service providers in the Philippines.
As one of the largest cryptocurrency platforms globally, with an average daily trading volume of $65 billion and over 183 million members, Binance’s regulatory challenges in the Philippines underscore broader concerns. Moreover, the concerns are surrounding the oversight of digital asset exchanges and investor protection in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
