Shopify Inc (NASDAQ:SHOP) GMS Grew 29%

Shopify Inc (NASDAQ:SHOP) stock fell 1.77% (As on August 7, 11:22:37 AM UTC-4, Source: Google Finance) after the company posted second-quarter results that beat analyst expectations and issued stronger-than-forecast guidance for the third quarter. The company also reported that it has not seen drops in US demand and witnessed market acceleration during the quarter. Shopify’s gross merchandise sales (GMS) — the total value of goods sold on its platform — grew 29% year over year to $87.8 billion, topping Wall Street estimates of $81.5 billion. Shopify has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence to enhance its platform and attract a broader range of merchants. In May, the company launched an “AI store builder” capable of generating online storefronts from a few keywords. This week, it rolled out new AI tools to facilitate shopping via AI agents. Further, in the April-June period, Shopify saw revenue growth rates accelerate across regions including North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, quarter on quarter.

Meanwhile, the company revealed that it has initiated the rollout of Shopify Plus. This move, is expected to help streamline the operations and reduce operating expenses, especially those relating to marketing and customer service. Shopify Plus will help FST with its multiple automation, tracking, and analytics features to design, test, produce, and sell products swiftly. FST will be able to utilize these services rather than manually analyzing an ever-increasing assortment of administrative and customer data. Among many other features, Shopify Plus will enable direct sales for FST through social media posts. This will allow FST to monetize increased attention better after golf tournament wins.

SHOP in the second quarter of FY25 has reported the adjusted earnings per share of 35 cents, beating the analysts’ estimates for the adjusted earnings per share of 29 cents, according to analysts polled by LSEG. The company had reported the adjusted revenue growth of 31 percent to $2.68 billion in the second quarter of FY25, beating the analysts’ estimates for revenue of $2.55 billion.

Shopify offered upbeat third-quarter guidance, projecting revenue growth in the “mid-to-high twenties percentage rate” year over year, compared to analysts’ expectations of 21.7% growth, according to StreetAccount. Company executives noted that potential impacts from US tariffs, which had been factored into prior guidance, did not materialize. The company expects operating expenses to decline slightly as a share of revenue, falling to 38%–39% in the third quarter compared to 39%–40% in the previous quarter.
