
Friday’s mixed set of data releases from Canada saw the Loonie tank 0.29% against its US counterpart as questions continue to be raised over the health of the Canadian economy.
Core CPI
In a report issued by Statistics Canada, it was revealed that Canadian core consumer price inflation increased more-than-expected last month. Official data released on Friday showed that Canadian core CPI increased to a seasonally adjusted figure of 0.3%, jumping considerably from the -0.4% recorded in the in the preceding month. This came after analysts had been expecting Canadian core CPI to show an increase to 0.2% last month.
Retail Sales
In the report issued by Statistics Canada, it was revealed that Canadian retail sales declined more-than-expected in January. Official data revealed that retail sales declined to -2.2%, from the 1.7% recorded in December. This came after analysts had been expecting retail sales to post a decline of -0.6% for January.
CPI
Official data on Friday released by Statistics Canada showed that consumer inflation in Canada posted a surprise increase last month. Canadian consumer price inflation increased to 0.2% on a monthly basis, from the -0.5% recorded in the preceding month. This came after analysts had been expecting Canadian consumer price inflation to show a decline of -0.1% last month.
Core Retail Sales
The final piece of information coming from Canada on a busy Friday was core retail sales. Core retail sales in Canada declined more-than-expected in January. The report issued by Statistics Canada showed that Canadian core retail sales declined to a seasonally adjusted figure of -1.6%, a large drop from the 1.0% recorded in December, having already been revised down from 1.1%. The figures disappointed markets after analysts had been expecting Canadian core retail sales to show a decline of -0.5% for the last month.
