Solana Pay decentralized payment protocol has announced its integration with Shopify e-commerce platform. The partnership will possibly open up new payment possibilities for millions of businesses on the platform.
Solana Pay Streamlining Crypto Payments and Reducing Costs
Solana Pay, which debuted in February 2022, has chosen USDC as the initial payment option for this integration. USDC stablecoin is selected because of its close tie to the U.S. dollar. However, the protocol is also considering adding cryptocurrencies like SOL and BONK in the future.
USDC is a digital dollar that many consumers are already comfortable using. This makes it a practical choice for merchants looking to embrace crypto payments. Additionally, USDC offers a level of regulatory compliance that many alternative cryptocurrencies lack.
Shopify is a heavyweight in the world of e-commerce, accounting for 10% of total U.S. e-commerce. The Solana ecosystem boasts over 11.5M active accounts. Moreover, Solana Pay has gained adoption from major crypto players like Circle and Phantom.
Josh Fried, responsible for business development and partnerships at Solana Foundation, believes that payments are crypto’s “killer app.” Moreover, he emphasizes the importance of focusing on crypto payments, stating, “[Everyone] should be doubling down on this.”

Traditional credit card processing fees can be significant, ranging from 1.5% to 3.5% per transaction. In contrast, utilizing Solana Pay is almost “fee-free.” The average cost per transaction on Solana’s blockchain is a minuscule $0.00025. Solana’s improved uptime in Q2 further enhances its appeal as a payment solution.
Crypto Integration on the Rise: Solana Pay and Shopify Leading the Way
Solana Pay’s integration with Shopify facilitates the creation of loyalty programs with minimal development effort. Merchants can easily implement reward systems too.
Several crypto-focused teams and brands, including Helius, Mad Lads, and MonkeDAO, have already agreed to integrate Solana Pay into their Shopify stores. What’s more, Shopify is no stranger to crypto payment options. In February, the platform introduced a range of blockchain-enabled commerce tools and features, enabling merchants to develop tokengating applications. Shopify also integrates with other payment applications like Coinbase Commerce, Strike, Crypto.com, and BitPay.
This integration between Solana Pay and Shopify opens up a world of possibilities for crypto payments, reducing costs and enhancing the shopping experience for customers.
