Crypto Payments Transforming South Africa’s Financial Landscape
Cryptocurrencies have opened doors to fresh financial opportunities. Tracy-Lee Schoeman, Vice President of Loyalty and Rewards at Ukheshe, emphasizes how these digital currencies can revolutionize transactions, offering lower fees, quicker settlements, and greater financial autonomy. The Scan to Pay app will serve as the gateway to these transformative crypto payment options.
A recent Deloitte survey highlights that nearly 75% of US retailers are considering accepting cryptocurrencies or stablecoins soon. South Africa follows suit, with major retailers and even local spaza shops already welcoming crypto payments.
Ronan Quarmby, CEO at Xion, notes that approximately 12.5% of South Africa’s population owns cryptocurrency. Most of these crypto holders are aged 18-44, with 52% using crypto for purchases. The shift towards web3 payments is evident in the country’s growing interest in digital currencies.
As cryptocurrency adoption surges, South African businesses see its potential benefits. A remarkable 94% of business owners believe that integrating cryptocurrency payments could be advantageous.

Users will enjoy a straightforward payment process similar to traditional methods. By linking their Metamask wallet, customers can scan a QR code on their receipt, check the amount in the Scan to Pay app, select ‘pay with crypto voucher,’ and complete the transaction with a single click.
Xion Global Pioneers Secure Web3 Payments in the Region
Xion Global ensures robust security with features like AML, KYC, KYB, and KYT to safeguard against unauthorized funds and deter malicious merchant activities. Partnering with Polygon Labs, Xion Global aims to spearhead the Web3 payments movement in South Africa.
This partnership is just the beginning. Xion Global plans to roll out the solution in phases. Phase 1 offers gasless USDT (Polygon) transactions, expanding to multi-chain payments in phase 2. Phase 3 will introduce cashback rewards, loyalty programs, and discounts at select Scan to Pay merchants, motivating users to make crypto payments a part of their daily routines.
Schoeman views this partnership as a step toward Ukheshe’s vision of financial inclusion for all South Africans. Cryptocurrencies, as a decentralized financial option, are gaining traction among consumers in emerging markets, helping overcome traditional banking challenges. This collaboration blends traditional and web3 payment methods to reduce transaction fees, enhance incentives, and broaden financial inclusion.
