The Tor Project is now officially accepting Bitcoin donations via the Lightning Network. The project recommends the use of the BottlePay wallet, which also allows direct donations and supports crypto and fiat currencies.
According to a recent announcement by the Tor Project — the project behind anonymous network and browser, Tor — its developers are willing to accept Bitcoin donations through the Lightning Network.
Tor browser and network are famous among online privacy seekers, many of which are also cryptocurrency users. Now, those who might be feeling charitable can help the Tor Project with their Bitcoin donations.
The project announced this only yesterday, November 19th, during the Bitcoin Tuesday fundraising initiative led by the Giving Block. Tor also announced their choice of a wallet for BTC donations, naming BottlePay as the best solution. This wallet’s users can simply search for the Tor Project inside it, as the project allowed the wallet to list its address for the users’ convenience.
Donations to Tor
Tor Project is known for being a nonprofit organization that has developed and maintained the Tor Network for years now. As privacy and anonymity-supporting organization, the project has decided to make use of Bitcoin’s Lightning Network. This is a layer-2 payment protocol that supports minor transactions and delivers them instantly.
Apart from the LN, the service also accepts public donations sent through tweets, or to send them through a wallet directly. In fact, the wallet also works with fiat currencies, automatically converting various traditional currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, and around 19 more of them into crypto.
So far, the Tor Network’s development mostly received funds from American government agencies. The project was supported ever since its parent company, Onion Routing, was originally founded in 1995.
In years that followed, the Tor Network has seen use for good and nefarious purposes alike. It is widely known for its use on the dark web, but it also allowed those living under oppressive regimes to anonymously communicate. There is also the fact that whistleblowers used it for exposing crimes and wrongdoings of officials around the world.
These days, the network is used for ensuring privacy and anonymity, not only when it comes to communication, but also crypto transactions.
