The crypto enforcement group of the US Department of Justice is presently targeting the bad actors engaged in hacking as well as exploiting the entities within the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. This endeavor is being taken at a time when a 4-year rise is being witnessed in illegal operations related to crypto assets.
Reports Say that the US DOJ Is Targeting DeFi Exploiters
On the 15th of this month, a report was published by Financial Times. As per that report, Eun Young Choi – who serves as the director of the national cryptocurrency enforcement team of the United States Department of Justice – also opened up on this matter. The official mentioned that the agency is paying great attention to the hacks as well as thefts aimed at the platforms within the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.
While providing details on this, the official specified that the particular focus is given to the chain bridges. In addition to this, Choi brought to the front that this is categorized as a very crucial issue to be taken into consideration by the DOJ. A significant reason behind this development has been the rise of the North Korean government-supported hackers who played the role of the chief damaging actors in this industry.

North Korean exploiters potentially took away a huge worth ranging from $630M to above $1B in the form of cryptocurrencies throughout the last year, as per the reports published in February. According to the announcement of the DOJ, Choi (who is a prosecutor with a lengthy experience of almost a decade under the DOJ) was made the NCET’s 1st director back in February last year.

Back then, a statement was made by the department in which the agency elaborated the chief purposes that the newly formed NCET will attempt to fulfill. The statement stressed that the NCET will play the role of the DOJ’s focal point in handling the forfeiture, money laundering, cybercrime, and crypto assets.
Although the DOJ pointed out that the agency would focus on tumbling and mixing services, nothing particular has been mentioned by it in the case of the DeFi entities at that time. Choi noted that DOJ aims at the firms that are either engaged in crimes or let such activities happen, taking into account money laundering and other such activities.
