U.S. stocks rise broadly on weaker jobs data and policy optimism

U.S. equities moved higher today with the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all advancing, as the S&P 500 pushed to a fresh record. December nonfarm payrolls rose by 50,000, below expectations of around 65,000, while the unemployment rate edged down to 4.4%, reinforcing expectations that the Fed could maintain accommodative policies on interest-rate. The softer labor data helped underpin risk sentiment and kept rate-cut expectations later in 2026 in play.

In addition to the macro tailwind, sentiment was supported by comments from Donald Trump signaling potential policy moves aimed at easing mortgage conditions and supporting the housing market. The prospect of lower borrowing costs and renewed housing activity helped lift broader risk appetite and supported gains across sectors, allowing the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq to move higher together. Overall, today’s advance reflects a combination of cooling labor data and policy-driven optimism rather than a narrow or speculative rally.
