USD/CHF Under Pressure as Weak US Labor Data Shifts Fed Sentiment

During the European session on Friday, the USD/CHF currency pair hovered near 0.9060 amid negative sentiment following weak US labor data released on Thursday. This has sparked discussions about a potential shift in the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance on monetary policy, leading to a decline in US Treasury yields and the US dollar.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported higher-than-expected Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending May 3, with numbers rising to 231,000. This surpassed estimates and indicated a rise from the previous week’s figures. Consequently, the US Dollar Index (DXY) trades around 105.20, with US Treasury yields, including 2-year and 10-year yields, at 4.81% and 4.44%, respectively.

Meanwhile, Swiss banks are closed due to the Ascension Day holiday, contributing to a decline in the 10-year Swiss government bond yield below 0.7%, approaching a new monthly low alongside global bond yield decreases. This lowered the attractiveness of Swiss assets for foreign investors, impacting demand for the Swiss franc.

Recent data from the Swiss National Bank (SNB) indicates an increase in foreign exchange reserves, reaching CHF 720 billion in April. This marks a consecutive rise and reflects a shift away from actively strengthening the Swiss franc. The SNB’s focus has shifted towards addressing inflation concerns.

Additionally, the Swiss Unemployment Rate declined to 2.3% in April, the lowest in four months, as reported by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs.
