USD/JPY Climbs Toward Key 160 Level as Strong US Data Boosts Dollar

The USD/JPY pair moved higher on Monday, approaching the 159.70 region and edging closer to the psychologically important 160.00 level, an area closely watched by traders due to the possibility of intervention from Japanese authorities. The advance was largely driven by renewed strength in the US Dollar (USD), supported by robust economic data from the United States and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.

The latest US manufacturing figures provided fresh momentum for the Greenback. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing PMI rose to 54.0 in May from 52.7 in April, surpassing market expectations of 53.0 and marking the strongest reading in several months. The data indicated that manufacturing activity continues to expand at a healthy pace, reinforcing confidence in the resilience of the US economy.

Additional details from the report highlighted improving labor market conditions within the manufacturing sector. The Employment Index increased to 48.6 from 46.4, signaling a gradual recovery in hiring activity. Meanwhile, the Prices Paid Index eased to 82.1 from 84.6, suggesting that inflationary pressures remain elevated but are showing signs of moderation.

Beyond economic data, market sentiment remains heavily influenced by geopolitical developments. Investors reacted to reports that Iran had suspended communications with the United States following recent regional military actions. The latest escalation reduced optimism for a near-term diplomatic resolution and contributed to a cautious market environment.

While geopolitical tensions typically support safe-haven demand for the Japanese Yen (JPY), the stronger US Dollar and rising expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain restrictive monetary policy have outweighed Yen demand. As a result, USD/JPY continues to trade near multi-month highs.

Looking ahead, traders will focus on upcoming US labor market releases, particularly Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report. A stronger-than-expected employment reading could reinforce expectations of higher-for-longer US interest rates and potentially push USD/JPY closer to the 160.00 threshold.

Trade Idea:
Buy USD/JPY above 159.50 targeting 160.00 and 160.50. A break below 159.00 could trigger profit-taking and expose downside risks toward 158.30.
